Department Of Tibetan

The Tibetan Department was established in the year 1958 with the aim of promoting the study and preservation of Tibetan language, culture, and history. Since its inception, the department had been a centre for scholarly research and cultural exchange. Over the years, the department has been home to many distinguished scholars and a research hub which is evident with the number of valuable books that the department holds in its seminar library. Notable previous professors include Professor Samten Norbu Yalmoo, renowned for his work on Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, Professor Lopsang Gyaltsen Bhutia, renowned for his work on Bon Religion. Since the year 2021 the department is led by Dr. Lhundup Tsomo Bhutia W.B.E.S. who has completed her M.A., M.phil, and Ph.D from University of Delhi and has been actively involved in student participation with all round development of the students focusing on first hand experiences in terms of curriculum/ syllabus. The students are exposed to field study and excursions, presentations and seminars on topics related to the syllabus and beyond. The holistic approach towards the students makes the department unique, approachable and encouraging. Where not only students but research scholars, and professors have sought answers to their field of expertise.
