Department of Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology was introduced in the year 2008 in Darjeeling Government College. Currently the Department has three dedicated, energetic female teachers.  The Department of Microbiology offers under graduate course. The course is completely under the academic syllabi of University of North Bengal. The B.Sc. in Microbiology at present has two different patterns, Choice Based Credit system (CBCS) pattern introduced in 2018 and the Four years Undergraduate program (FYUGP) as envisaged in the NEP 2020.

 The Department has basic research facility with laboratory equipped with advance instruments. The department regularly host seminars, webinars, workshop and special lectures by distinguished personalities in the field of Life Sciences. Students are given regular exposure to practical based knowledge via Industrial visit and field visits. The Department is in association with national body “Microbiology Society of India (MBSI)” from the year 2021 which works for popularising the subject and encouraging and supporting young Microbiologists. MBSI provides platform for students to attend various lectures on subject matter and also honour them with best student award every year. The study in the department is not limited to pen and paper but students are also encouraged and asked to deliver their presentation on the topic related to the syllabus via PowerPoint presentation. For the last 5 years the department has been getting 100% success in university examination. The Department also provides an environment that fosters continuous improvement and innovation in subject. The alumni of the department have achieved many heights around the country. Some of them have successfully cleared National level examination such as CSIR-NET, GATE, ICAR-NET, DBT-JRF and State level examination such as WB SET. It is heartening to mention here that some of them have attained the prestigious position in the Institutions of national importance such as NIT-Durgapur, National Institute of Immunology, Delhi, Bose Institute of Kolkata.

The faculties in the department are actively involved in outreach activity through National Children Science Congress, and in popularisation of Microbiology as a subject by organising workshop and other activities associated with the subject.
