Department of Commerce

General degree courses and Honours degree courses were developed in 1972 and 1988 respectively with the affiliation of the University of North Bengal, to meet the expanding demand for Commerce. Since then, the department has persisted in promoting education in a variety of business-related fields, such as Commerce, Management, Law, Economics, Mathematics & Statistics. The faculty in the department is highly skilled and knowledgeable, with a range of specializations within the field. At present, it has five faculty members out of which three belong to substantive post and two State Aided College Teachers. The curriculum and instructional strategies used align with the most effective and scientific ones. Plans are frequently established to provide students with sufficient exposure in order to improve their knowledge and practical skills.

 

The Department of Commerce has a number of facilities to enhance the learning environment, such as spacious, well-furnished classrooms with cutting-edge smart classroom technology and digital teaching aids.

 

The department is also equipped with a seminar library which helps the students to borrow required books for their study. The department has a dedicated placement cell to assist students in securing employment. The first recorded placement was of Sneha Rasaily from the B.Com Honours 2022 batch.

 

The department emphasizes hands-on learning and skills development through various programs and projects listed below:

  • Life Skills and Entrepreneurship Studies: Courses designed to build important life skills and promote an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Tea Estate and Business Projects: Special projects focused on the tea industry and business practices in Darjeeling.
  • Multi Farming Model Projects: Innovative projects that explore multiple farming models.
  • Skilling Programs: (a) Certificate courses in Banking, Finance, and Insurance

                               (b) Mahindra Pride Classroom initiative for skill development

The department regularly organizes career counseling and invites guest lecturers to motivate students and guide them on their career path. Students are trained in office management including systems like Panchayats and computer classes in collaboration with YCTSM.

 

The department encourages holistic development through various student activities such as;

  • " Freshers' Welcome and Farewell”, events to welcome fresh students and celebrate the graduation.
  • Holistic Study Approach: Comprehensive education approach encompassing academics, skills development, and personal growth.
