Some Basic Concepts

The aim of NSS is to give an extension dimension to the higher education system and orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institution. The reason for the formulation of this objective is the general realization that the college and+2 level students have a tendency to get alienated from the village/slum masses which constitute the majority of the population of the country. The educated youth are expected to take the responsibility of administration in future are found to unaware of the problems of the village/slum community and in certain cases are indifferent towards their needs and problems. Therefore it is necessary to arouse the social conscience of the students, and to provide them an opportunity to work with the people in the villages and slums. It is felt that their interaction with the common villagers and slum dwellers will expose them to the realities of life and bring about a change in their social perception.

Objectives

The broad objectives of NSS are to:-

Understand the community in which they work;
Understand themselves in relation to their community;
Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities;
Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters;
Practice national integration and social harmony.

The Motto

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is “ NOT ME BUT YOU”. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service ans appreciation of other person’s point of view and also show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the, NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.

The Symbol

The symbol of NSS is based on the “RATH” wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orrisa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of Creation,preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.

NSS Badge

The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS voulenteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS vouleenteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the Cosmos of which the NSS ia tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the Mankind.

NSS Day

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.

NSS Song

During Silver jubilee year the NSS theme song has been composed. All NSS voulenteers are expected to learn theme song and sing the song during NSS programmes and celebrations.

Darjeeling Govt. College, one of the first colleges of the region strives for the wholesome development of its students. By enrolling students in NSS we aim to inculcate a sense of social responsibility in the young minds. The objective is to reconnect the youths to the society they have come from. Through regular activities and special camp of NSS we try to give them an opportunity to come face to face with the problems and reality of the society which otherwise they tend to forget or ignore in the course of pursuing higher studies in urban areas. By devoting some time in voluntary service through NSS, youths can prioritize their actions and set goals that are both beneficial to them and the larger society. College NSS maintains an enrollment strength of 100(hundred) volunteers for each session, representing different departments (Honors and General course) right from U.G. 1st year to P.G. last semester. Every session, volunteers indulge themselves in regular activities that include campus cleaning drives, awareness programs on various themes, holding blood donation camps, observance and participation in several important days like Independence Day, World Environment Day,International Womens’ Day(8th march), Aids day, International Literacy Day (8th September), International Peace Day (15th September) etc. The College NSS unit sends its volunteers to participate in different kinds of awareness programmes organized by NGOs working in and around Darjeeling. While in special camps we select any typical village in and around the campus and organize a camp for couple of days there. The objective is to make volunteers know the problems and realities of their society wherein we stay, work, eat, organize awareness camps or cleaning drive of any jhora or stretch of street there and interact with villagers. This lets volunteers to have first hand experience of the village life and a sense of pride in contributing something good for the society. Venues for Special Camps were Aloobari Jungle Busti (8kms) and Rangaroon T.E (18kms) for 2016 and 2017 respectively.
